Sunflowers are one of the most rewarding garden plants — fast-growing, dramatic, and beloved by birds. In India, they can be grown twice a year with the right timing.

Best Planting Season in India

Sunflowers are best sown in two windows: January–February for summer blooms, and June–July for post-monsoon blooms. They need full sun for at least 6 hours daily. Avoid the peak monsoon period as heavy rain can damage tall stems.

Sowing and Growing

Sow seeds directly 1 inch deep, spacing plants 45–60 cm apart. They germinate in 5–10 days. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Tall varieties (1.5–2m) may need staking against strong winds. Dwarf varieties (45–60 cm) are ideal for pots and balconies.

💡 Tip: Sow seeds in batches every 2 weeks for a succession of blooms rather than one flush.

Common Varieties for India

Russian Giant (for tall statement plants), Prado Red and Velvet Queen (for unusual colour), and Teddy Bear (dwarf, double-petalled) are all widely available in Indian nurseries. Heirloom sunflower seeds from local markets work perfectly.

Harvesting Seeds for Birds and Eating

When the back of the flower head turns yellow and seeds are fat and striped, cut the head and hang upside down in a dry, ventilated space for 1–2 weeks. Roast seeds with salt for a nutritious snack, or hang the dry head directly in the garden for birds.

Conclusion

Sunflowers are one of the easiest plants to grow from seed, making them perfect for children and beginner gardeners. One packet of seeds can fill a garden bed and attract sunbirds, parrots, and finches all season.
