Chikmagalur Karnataka Coffee Baba Budan Giri Hill Station

Chikmagalur district in Karnataka's Western Ghats is where coffee was first grown in India β€” legend attributes this to Baba Budan, a Sufi saint who brought seven coffee beans from Yemen in the 17th century and planted them on the hills that now bear his name (Baba Budan Giri). Today, Chikmagalur is one of India's most beautiful coffee-growing landscapes, with misty hills, wildlife corridors, and exceptional trekking.

The Coffee Heritage of Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur produces some of India's finest arabica coffee β€” the Bababudangiri arabica is classified as a Geographical Indication product. The district contains approximately 100,000 hectares of coffee estates at elevations from 600-1,800m. Estate tours offer the complete coffee journey β€” walking through flowering coffee bushes (the white blossoms smell like jasmine), seeing ripe red coffee cherries, and witnessing the wet or dry processing methods before cupping. Several estates offer accommodation: The Rainforest Retreat (certified organic), Valnur Estate, and Tata Coffee Grand Coorg Consolidated Estate.

  • Bababudangiri arabica β€” Geographical Indication certified
  • Estate tours β€” coffee flower to cup experience
  • Best bloom season: February-March
  • Coffee harvest season: October-January (Arabica)

Mullayanagiri β€” Karnataka's Highest Peak

Mullayanagiri (1,930m) is Karnataka's highest peak β€” a 3km trek from the motorable road end near Bababudangiri offers the full climb. The summit is marked by a small Shiva temple. Views encompass the entire Bababudangiri range, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, and on very clear days, the Arabian Sea to the west. The Chandra Drona hill cluster contains several peaks in the 1,600-1,800m range accessible for day treks from Chikmagalur town. The Hebbe Falls (16km off the Chikmagalur-Mudigere road) β€” a twin waterfall dropping 168m β€” is excellent during post-monsoon (September-January).

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

Adjacent to Chikmagalur, Bhadra Tiger Reserve (492 sq km) protects a continuous forest corridor from the Sahyadri hills to Nagarhole. Elephants, leopards, gaur, and Malabar giant squirrels are the key wildlife. Boat safaris on the Bhadra reservoir are unique β€” the flooded teak and rosewood forest stumps emerging from the water create an eerie beauty, and wildlife regularly comes to the water's edge. Book boat safaris at the Muthodi range headquarters (25km from Chikmagalur). The reserve is less visited than Nagarhole, providing a more intimate wildlife experience.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Combine Chikmagalur with Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and the Shettihalli Church (partially submerged Gothic church in the Hemavati backwaters) for a full 3-day Western Ghats experience that balances coffee culture, wildlife, and landscape photography.

Best Time and Getting There

September-March is ideal β€” post-monsoon green landscape, pleasant temperatures (15-25Β°C), and coffee harvest activity. Chikmagalur is 245km from Bengaluru (4-5 hours by road). Nearest railway station: Kadur (30km) or Hassan (40km). A hire car from Bengaluru for 3-4 days is the most convenient approach, allowing access to estates, peaks, and the wildlife sanctuary. Mangalore (95km) provides an alternative base for visitors arriving by coastal Karnataka.

Conclusion

Chikmagalur offers something genuinely rare β€” a beautiful natural landscape where the primary human activity (coffee growing) actively benefits biodiversity by maintaining shade canopy and forest cover. Coffee here is not just a product; it is a landscape philosophy. Visiting is the best way to understand and support that philosophy.
