Periyar Lake β created in 1895 by the Mullaperiyar Dam on the Periyar River β is the centrepiece of Kerala's Periyar Tiger Reserve. At 26 sq km and 2,000m altitude, surrounded by tropical forests on all sides, the lake provides the critical water source that makes Periyar one of India's most reliable destinations for wildlife sightings.
Lake Ecology and Wildlife Viewing
The lake draws wildlife from throughout the 925 sq km reserve β particularly Asian elephants, gaur, sambar, and Nilgiri Langur. The dead trees standing in the lake (drowned when the reservoir was formed) provide nesting sites for water birds: cormorants, darters, grey herons, and kingfishers. The Forest Department's bamboo raft tours drift silently along the shore while elephants wade, bathe, and drink metres away β one of India's most intimate wildlife experiences.
Boat Safari Options
Two boat safari types operate on Periyar Lake: Forest Department motorboats (larger capacity, noisier but gives good overview of the lake shores, 2 hours); and bamboo rafts (silent, 6-person maximum, closest elephant encounters, advance booking essential). The bamboo raft tour departs at 7:30 AM β arrive at the forest office by 7 AM to secure booking. Both tours leave from the Kumily boat jetty. Safety life jackets are provided. Season: September-May; peak wildlife viewing: November-March.
The Periyar River and Borders
The Periyar River flows through the reserve and exits as the Pampa River to the west β a significant source of domestic water for Kerala's southern districts. The river and lake system create 26 sq km of water surface that concentrates wildlife in a way unique among Indian tiger reserves. The combination of aquatic habitat, tropical forest, and the artificial lake edges creates exceptional biodiversity in a compact area.
Staying Near Periyar Lake
Accommodation ranges from luxury (Spice Village by CGH Earth β architectually extraordinary tribal-inspired design) to government accommodation inside the reserve at Aranya Nivas (forest department guesthouse right at the lake shore β basic but exceptional location). Kumily town outside the reserve has good mid-range options. The Cardamom Hills around Periyar produce cardamom, pepper, and ginger β spice garden tours combine well with the lake safari.
Conclusion
Periyar Lake is the rare case of a human-made intervention (the colonial-era dam) creating an outstanding wildlife habitat. The reservoir that displaced forest has become a year-round gathering point for the reserve's wildlife, offering one of India's most accessible and reliable wildlife experiences.
